Now and Then… A History

“Now and Then” is a song that was worked on by the Beatles during their sessions for the “White Album” in 1968, but it was never completed or officially released by the band. The song’s history is somewhat obscure and surrounded by speculation due to the limited information available.

The origins of “Now and Then” can be traced back to the “White Album” sessions, which took place from May to October 1968 at Abbey Road Studios in London. During these sessions, the Beatles were prolific, recording numerous songs, many of which ended up on the double album officially titled “The Beatles” but commonly referred to as the “White Album” because of its plain white cover.

“Now and Then” was one of the songs being worked on during these sessions. It was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, reflecting their collaborative songwriting approach. However, the song was never fully developed or completed to the band’s satisfaction.

The original recordings of “Now and Then” are sparse and incomplete. Some rough demo recordings did and formed the basis of recently released final track.

Over the years, there has been speculation among Beatles fans about why “Now and Then” was never completed and released. Some theories suggest that internal tensions within the band, creative differences, or simply the overwhelming number of songs being recorded during the “White Album” sessions contributed to its abandonment.

The released track demonstrates just what a talent the band was.
