After the Break-up: 1970-1980 – Putting It Back Together Again?

In April 1970, one of the biggest newspaper headlines (if not the biggest) in the so-called ‘western world’ (at least), was that Paul McCartney had announced in an interview that he’d quit The Beatles, and, as a result, the band had ceased to be. Well, that’s the generic, generally accepted and universally declared version of how it all unfolded. But that’s not how the break-up occurred as such. As he and Ringo Starr have since recalled, it was John Lennon, the group’s effective leader given that he was the original and founding member from its earliest incarnation as The Quarrymen back in the 1950s, who effectively put an end to the partnership in 1969, in September, it’s reported, when, he later claimed, he famously told his long-time drummer, and McCartney and George Harrison at a meeting that he wanted “a divorce.” (Read the complete article on Occult Beatles)
