The Quarrymen were formed in 1956 at Quarry Bank School by John Lennon, with Bill Smith, Pete Shotton, Eric Griffiths and Rod Davis. Others came and went, like Ivan Vaughan and Nigel Walley (who became manager).

The group then added Colin Hanton and Len Garry.

On 22nd June 1957, Charlie Roberts photographed John and The Quarrymen for the first time. Just a couple of weeks later, on 6th July 1957, Paul McCartney was introduced to John Lennon by Ivan Vaughan, with George Harrison being added in December 1957 at the expense of Eric. Meanwhile, in the Dingle, Richy Starkey was playing with the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group.

In 1958, John Duff Lowe occasionally played with the group and on 12th July 1958, John, Paul, George, Colin and John Duff Lowe made a record at Percy Phillips’ studio.

After briefly splitting up in early 1959, they reformed to open The Casbah Club on 29th August 1959 with Ken Brown. After an argument a few weeks later, The Quarrymen limped to the end of the year, even using the title Johnny and the Moondogs once. By the end of 1959, they had recruited Stuart Sutcliffe, but they weren’t a group. All that would change in 1960.
